Stepping out of COMFY old shoes…

(written Wednesday, August 24, 2011)
A few weeks ago, my family and I set out to take the two to over two-hour journey to my mom’s house to visit the local congested area of the HWY 127 Corridor Yard Sale. It takes place every year the first weened of August (starting the Thursday prior). It has grown so much that is now stretches from Alabama to Michigan!

Taking advantage of our son and his grandma spending time together, my husband and I set out to “treasure hunt” …or “junk hunt” as some may call it on our own (a VERY rare time for us). LOL!

Just our luck, for this rare opportunity, it began to rain as we arrived at the first local spot. Although it started to really pour down after arriving, we didn’t allow it to stop us. We took our comfy old shoes off; my husband rolled his pant legs up and we continued to play in the rain…like the big kids that we are…running and jumping from open booth to open booth. We enjoyed the day splashing each other and having a great time as though we had turned time back and we were teenagers again. LOL!

During our booth hopping, I came upon this little “treasure”!

What an inspiration as I spotted this helpless hummingbird laying there all alone among the many tables loaded with tubs and boxes full of jewelry with missing or broken pieces. My brain flooded with ideas…another reason for visiting the area. Oh, the inspiration that comes from so many places that turns my “lightbulb” on! (big grin)

I designed this piece using a resin technique on the silk and fabric flowers.
Here is a closeup of his little-added friend.

The back is matched and sealed with Diamond Glaze.

I not only stepped out of my “comfy old shoes” to run around in the rain but, I also stepped out of them to ventured out into a jewelry medium that I was not quite yet comfortable with.

Also, make sure you put your hair (if long) “completely” up and out of the way when creating with resin. Yes, I learned that valuable lesson. I sported a chunk out of my (right at waist length) hair for a while after the adventure of creating this piece.

It certainly isn’t a Spoon (our jewelry making specialty) but, I think the hummingbird looks very comfortable in its new home. Now, off to tackle the matching necklace to adorn this beautiful piece!
Have a blessed week!
